QEII Park Recreation and Sports Centre

Christchurch’s QEII facility was originally built to host the 1974 Commonwealth Games and remained the flagship of the City’s recreation centres. The 2002 upgrade and expansion provided the facility with a brand new 10 lane 50m pool, teach pool and at the time touted as Australasia’s largest indoor leisure and wave pool, this facility contains four separate pools to meet a variety of swimmers needs. The existing dive tank was enhanced with the addition of a new dive tower.

This aquatic venue in Christchurch New Zealand has hosted FINA Water Polo World Cup events, World Masters Championships and countless national swimming events.

VDA worked with the Lord of the Rings film set designers to develop the Atlantis themed leisure pool.

Unfortunately, the entire QE II complex including the new aquatic facilities were severely damaged in the 2011 earthquake, as was much of Christchurch. QE II is now schedule for demolition, alas, Atlantis is lost once again.

VDA acted as Specialist Recreation Consultant for this project.
