Inuvik Family Centre – Midnight Sun Recreation Complex

This project was full of firsts for VDA. First pool in the Arctic, first Italian designed prefabricated stainless steel pool, first pool built on permafrost, first in-ground refrigeration system below a pool, first pool to use displacement ventilation. VDA worked closely with the pool manufacturer to develop new jigs and templates to accommodate the “curvaceous” design of the pool not previously available in a prefabricated pool. The project required all the skills the design team had to offer in order for it to be successfully design and built.

The Family Centre combines the lap and leisure pool as a cost saving measure, without forsaking all the features of a larger aquatic facility; waterslide, lazy river, vortex, bubble pit, tots pool, swirl pool, steam room, sauna, sprays, two squash courts, change rooms, a snack bar and sitting area.

This community made the dream of an aquatic centre come true partly through the use of a high quality Sponsorship and Gift Program that allowed individuals and corporations to sponsor both large and small features of the facility. Sponsorship opportunities ranged from $100 to $250,000.

VDA acted as Specialist Pool Consultant to Wayne Guy Architect.

This project was full of firsts for the design team. This is the first VDA facility to use a prefabricated stainless steel pool due to its remote location and high cost of concrete. VDA worked closely with the pool manufacturer to create new jigs and templates to accommodate the “curvaceous” design of the pool and they will now be able to easily accommodate other VDA pool designs that think outside the “box”. It is also the first aquatic centre in Canada to have a Displacement Ventilation system in a pool hall.
