Viking Air Manufacturing Plant

In addition to providing state-of-the-art space for manufacturing de Havilland aircraft products, this structure houses the Viking Air corporate headquarters. The design of the office and ancillary space was as important as that for the manufacturing space; it needed to be functional, practical, yet impressive enough for the national and international clients of this rapidly growing aerospace manufacturing company. The office portion of the building was built using traditional construction methods. The exterior of the office space includes a series of classic brick columns adorning the new building’s exterior, a design frill mimicking the original de Havilland factory in Downsview Ontario, and a glass and wood entry canopy forming twin “V”s which adds a sense of drama to the main entrance. Details on the cornices include the de Havilland logo.

Part of the challenge was the size of the facility, it’s a BIG building. Clear spanning 205 feet and providing 30 feet of clear height without any visible framing, the inside of the structure appears cavernous. There is no visible structure that needed to be planned for or worked around, so that has made for a more flexible interior plan and layout options for Viking.

There are many design details that reflect the aerospace usage of the structure. From the wing strut staircase to the repetition of the air foil shape in wall details, acoustic treatments, handrails, etc.  Industrial/aerospace finishes were used in such a way as to produce a sophisticated luxurious corporate headquarters and to provide a smooth transition to the manufacturing facilities. The nod to the original Ontario based de Havilland was the jumping off point for the design. As is the Twin Otter itself, the design inspiration for the building was timeless and classic and provided a visual link from the past to the future.
