Lewis Recreation Centre Expansion and Renovation

This expansion and partial renovation addressed current and future user needs, programing, improved indoor air quality, provided accessibility to administration offices servicing users in wheelchairs and scooters, and improved foyer/entrance, common and social areas, new wellness and fitness centre, larger (and accessible) change rooms, renovated squash courts, and overall upgrades to the facility.

The Lewis Recreation Centre Expansion project began with a study of the existing facility and meetings with staff and user groups.  VDA met with key members of the Town of Courtenay and the facility staff in order to hear directly what the concerns were, what the priorities were, and what solutions should be considered. VDA then toured the facility and had informal conversations with programming, administration and maintenance staff to hear what observations they had. The observations and comments were summarized and presented to the public and user groups to hear from their perspective how things could be improved and what they viewed as priorities.  After summarizing all of the above, we met again with the key members of the Town and facility staff to review, discuss, and finalise the program objectives. Based on this and with all key persons having buy-in to the direction, VDA prepared a concept of how to best achieve the project’s objectives, reviewed again with key members and modified as needed. Budgets were always considered carefully throughout the process, as was planning around maintaining facility operations during construction..VDA was Prime Consultant for this project.
