Laxgalts’ap Recreation Centre

The goal of this project was to create a cultural, social, and recreational focal point for the community of Laxgalts’ap (Greenville). The final design represented the efforts, thoughts, ideas, and expectations of the people of Laxgalts’ap.

Laxgalts’ap (Greenville) is a small Nisga’a community located on the banks of the Nass River in northern British Columbia. VDA has worked with the Laxgalts’ap Village Government over a number of years to help determine the facility needs for this community and, working with David Narine and Associates Ltd., included a fully integrated community consultation process comprised of a community survey, focus groups, and community meetings in order to ensure that it represented the community’s vision, goals, and objectives

The main hall will function as a full-size NBA basketball court, a performance hall with stage and a combination of retractable bleacher and fixed balcony The hall will comfortably seat over 1000 people for feasts and have spectator seating for approximately 800 people for feasts and other large gatherings.

An Elder’s Room, youth centre, fitness studio, aerobics studio, computer lab, classrooms, multipurpose rooms, and a large kitchen to service both feasts in the main hall and a cafeteria are provided. The main foyer also functions as an exhibition space for either permanent or temporary exhibits.
